for 6th, 7th or 8th graders who submit winning entries in two contests
- Deck Design — Create artwork for a skateboard deck that conveys the importance of our new skatepark to our community and expresses the spirit of the athletes who will use it. Take into consideration the location chosen for the park. What else is important about La Colonia de Eden Gardens? Are there images or community icons you could reference in your artwork? Other board sports that Solana Beach is known for? Consider incorporating the current skatepark logo — or create a new logo!
- Documentary — Develop a video on the history of the skate park, from idea to grand opening. Answer: Whose idea was it to build the skatepark? Why? When was the idea first proposed? What were the steps to get the park approved, funded and built? How much has it cost? Where did funding come from? How and why was the La Colonia site selected? Were there challenges along the way? How were they overcome?
Individuals or teams of students in 6th, 7th or 8th grades at Skyline, Earl Warren, St. James Academy and Santa Fe Christian schools are invited to submit entries in either or both categories.
Entry requirements:
Deck artwork should reflect consideration of the Skatepark’s location, development and importance to the Solana Beach community today and for future generations. Artwork should be sized to 33-by-9 inches. Original paintings or drawings can photographed for submission; digital design should be submitted as .pdf, .jpg, .png files.
Documentaries should accurately answer the questions posed above and reflect the makers’ understanding of the importance of the park. Documentaries should run no longer than 10 minutes and be provided in a format suitable for launching from a website, text, or email link.
Projects will be assessed both on content and technical execution by panels of judges including skateboarding community influencers, City officials and members of the Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society.
