This morning's sketch seems on track.
I'm still practicing drawing planar heads. As I've been working through these last few, I have recognized another deficiency. I don't seem to excel at capturing the illusion of form through value differences. It's something on which I need to keep working.
These are all drawings of the same planar head, drawn from a similar position. These are all supposed to look the same. They all look different. None of them looks very much like the planar head I am attempting to draw, and that is why I feel the need to continue this exercise. I have increased my practice to two fifteen minute sessions each day -- one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
So, I'm trying to reestablish my eye and my abilities, and I am -- of course -- documenting and presenting it. I've been spending fifteen minutes each morning, at six in the morning, drawing planar heads. My hope is that I eventually get better.
I'm switching from graphite to charcoal. Actually, I wanted to try a "trois" technique, which uses black, white, and sanguine charcoal. Unfortunately the white charcoal doesn't show up on white paper (these photos haven't been white balanced). So I am switching to sketching on toned paper. These are the last four sketches I plan on making in this sketch book for a while. I've been trying to sketch each morning, but I'm inconsistent. I did some Hogarth heads for a couple of days, but I wasn't a huge fan of Hogarth's technique. After that I switched to drawing a simple Asaro head from different angles. I started sketching for an hour each day. Then I took a break. I picked it up again with about fifteen minutes a day. That's not enough... I've got to practice more -- no excuses.
I've spent my day sketching some Reilly abstractions. I'm not old enough to have studied under Frank Reilly. He passed away a few years before I was born. I have not studied under anyone who studied under Frank Reilly either. My knowledge of Reilly abstractions comes from tertiary and quaternary sources. Not surprisingly, there seem to be a lot of different interpretations of Reilly abstractions on the internet. I'm sure I did something wrong.
